Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash after past social media posts resurfaced.
The *Emilia Pérez* star, who recently became the first openly transgender actress nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, made controversial remarks about Muslim culture, George Floyd, and diversity in Hollywood.
In a since-deleted 2021 post about the Academy Awards, she reportedly wrote, “I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”
A 2020 post allegedly questioned the growing Muslim presence in Spain, suggesting Arabic might replace English in schools.
Following criticism, Gascón issued a statement: “I deeply regret any pain I have caused. As someone from a marginalized community, I understand this suffering and have always fought for a better world.”
She also clarified remarks about fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres, stating she was referring to toxic online discourse rather than Torres herself.
A day before the controversy, Gascón posted on X, calling herself “Public Enemy No. 1” and addressing ongoing criticism, writing, “Maybe one day they’ll understand that hatred won’t get them anywhere.” Netflix has not commented on the situation.
