The cast of the popular melodrama *Pretty Woman* could have looked very different. It’s been 32 years since its release, yet this classic film is still enjoyed by millions.
Julia Roberts’ vibrant, candid performance in the film catapulted her to stardom, while Richard Gere’s role solidified his status as a Hollywood heartthrob. However, few realize that Gere almost turned down the role.
Director Garry Marshall initially sent Gere the script, but he wasn’t impressed with the character of Edward Lewis, finding him rather shallow.
Despite the producer’s efforts—offering a generous fee and even suggesting plot changes—Gere remained uninterested. In a last attempt, Marshall asked Julia Roberts herself to talk to Gere, hoping her charm might sway him.
The two actors spent an entire evening together, and Gere started to reconsider.
When he got home, he discovered a note Julia had secretly left in his pocket, simply saying, “Say yes, please.” This heartfelt touch convinced him, and he agreed to take the role.
The movie became a huge box-office success, earning multiple award nominations, including for the Oscars and Golden Globes.
