The Most Fertile Woman: 40-Year-Old Mom of 38 Children with the Same Partner… Read the Story Here!

The story of Mariam Nabatanzi is remarkable and brings up important issues about early marriage, parenthood, and the challenges faced by many women in families. Here are some insights and thoughts:

Mariam Nabatanzi, a 40-year-old Ugandan woman, is known for giving birth to 44 children. Despite the immense challenges, Mariam remains a resilient and dedicated mother, working hard to provide for her children. Her ex-husband, who fathered all 38 surviving children, is no longer present to support the family. As a single parent, she faces significant challenges in caring for her family.

Documentary filmmaker Kassim Kayira, a former BBC journalist, uncovered Mariam’s story, interviewing her and sharing photos and videos on Facebook and YouTube. It is crucial to recognize the severity of this issue and work to prevent child marriage and protect young girls’ rights.

According to Kassim, Mariam was married off by her family at the age of 13, and her husband allegedly abused her from the start. While child marriage is common in East Africa, Mariam’s family situation is uniquely shocking.

Over nearly three decades, Mariam gave birth to 44 children, six of whom did not survive. She delivered all these children at home, with all but the youngest born vaginally and without painkillers. The youngest, still an infant, was born by caesarean section for reasons unknown.

Her eldest child is 24 years old. She has 10 daughters and 28 sons, including three sets of twins, three sets of quadruplets, four sets of triplets, and eight single births.

Mariam sought medical advice about her unusual fertility but was told nothing could be done to change her situation.

Her husband abandoned the family after the birth of their last child. In an interview with Kassim, Mariam stated that abandoning children should be considered a crime and emphasized the importance of men sharing responsibilities rather than leaving women to manage alone.

Moved by Mariam’s story, Ugandan Karo Omu set up a crowdfunding page aiming to raise Sh28.8 million to help provide basic necessities and healthcare for Mariam and her family and support them in starting a business to become self-sufficient.

Mariam is known as the most fertile mother in Uganda, but she is still far from the historical record. According to Guinness World Records, the most prolific mother was a Russian woman named Mrs. Vassilyeva in the 1700s, who gave birth to 69 children.

Can you imagine giving birth this many times and having so many mouths to feed on your own? If this story resonates with you, please share your thoughts and questions with us. We appreciate your support in spreading the word to your friends and family.
