In 2020, news emerged that Prince Harry had inked a deal with Penguin Random House to collaborate with journalist John Mehringer on a memoir.
The earnings from Prince Harry’s memoirs have been disclosed, and the figures may astound you.
Initially slated for release earlier, the book, titled “Spare,” faced multiple delays, and at one point, the Duke contemplated abandoning the project altogether. However, on January 10, the much-anticipated autobiography finally hit the shelves.
Reports from The Mirror revealed that Prince Harry received a staggering $20 million upfront for the memoir even before its publication. But that’s not all.
In addition to the upfront payment, the Duke also secured a substantial percentage of the sales, amounting to $16 million.
This hefty sum is hardly surprising, given the memoir’s immediate success in the UK, swiftly earning a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
Despite early leaks of some of the Duke’s revelations, anticipation for the memoir remained high, with a considerable number of eager readers eager to get their hands on a copy.
Within a week of its release, “Spare” had sold a remarkable 400,000 copies across various formats, including print, electronic, and audio.
Larry Finlay, managing director of the publishing house, expressed delight at the memoir’s extraordinary success, surpassing even their highest expectations. He noted that apart from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, no other books had outsold it.
Interestingly, Prince Harry hinted recently that there might be material for another autobiography in the future.
The original manuscript of “Spare” was twice its final length, with the Duke and his editor condensing 800 pages down to 400.
Although Prince Harry attributed the reduction to avoid further family tensions, it leaves open the possibility that Sussex fans might one day see a sequel.
