It has been just over a month since the news of Erin Jackson, the World Cup leader, losing her balance during the national team selection, jeopardizing her chances to compete in the 2022 Olympics, to her remarkable turnaround as she clinched the Olympic gold in Beijing.
And how long has Erin been skating?
Just under six incomplete years, that’s all.
Bianca Rosenbom, who was also involved in roller skating and marathons, introduced Jackson to ice skating. Despite her seemingly peculiar movements, Erin felt comfortable on the ice.
Bianca affectionately dubbed her “Bambi on ice.” Erin’s technical approach differed significantly from other contenders. Olga Fatkulina was astonished by Erin’s technique, noting her unique running style.
However, Erin’s unconventional approach proved successful as she secured the gold medal in Beijing.
Erin’s upbringing in a trailer, with her mother’s health struggles while working at a pharmacy, presented challenges during her childhood.
Yet, a fateful encounter with a coach led her to a group of roller skaters that included esteemed athletes like Joy Mantia and Brittany Bowe.
In January 2022, Erin received her Olympic qualification for the “500” from this group. It wasn’t Bianca but Erin’s own desire that propelled her onto the ice.
