It may sound surprising, but in the later stages of life, one can still turn aspirations from their youth into reality.
Such is the heartwarming story of an elderly woman who, after abandoning her high school education decades ago, finally achieved her dream of obtaining a GED at the age of 90.
The fulfillment of Ellouise’s dream was made possible by the compassionate staff at Gulfport Care Center, her retirement home.
Lisa Perdue, the Activities Director, played a pivotal role in discovering Ellouise’s lifelong ambition. Lisa identified a regional Christian school, Wells of SouthGate, that was willing to assist Ellouise in pursuing her GED.
Embracing the opportunity, Ellouise dedicated herself to studying for the practice exam provided by the educational center.
Her commitment and hard work paid off when she successfully completed the exam, earning her a GED with honors. Although not an official GED, this accomplishment marked a significant milestone, and Ellouise qualified for an official certification.
In a heartfelt ceremony at the retirement home, Ellouise was presented with her certificate from the training center. Dressed in an elegant gown, tears of joy streamed down her face as she realized the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition that had eluded her for so many years.
Expressing her happiness, Ellouise shared, “I was so happy when they told me I could get my GED here. I am still happy. I’m sorry, but realizing that I can do this makes me happy. I never had the chance to graduate until today.”
Lisa Perdue added, “Being able to accomplish this is a green light for me and my peers,” highlighting the inspirational impact of Ellouise’s achievement.
Notably, Ellouise became the first honorary recipient of a GED from the educational center. Leonard Martin, who presented her with the certificate, expressed his joy at being part of this significant moment and wished that more people would be inspired to follow Ellouise’s example.
