On September 2nd, the 84-year-old actress and climate campaigner took to Instagram to share her latest news. Unfortunately, the news is not good: she has been diagnosed with non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “So, my dear friends,” Jane captioned her Instagram photo. “I’d like to share something personal with you.” I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and have started chemotherapy.”

Most people would be devastated if they were diagnosed with cancer at any age. Jane Fonda, on the other hand, is upbeat since the type of cancer she has has a decent prognosis. She regards herself as “fortunate” as a result of this. “This is an extremely treatable malignancy.” “80% of individuals survive, therefore I consider myself really fortunate,” she wrote in an email.

The fact that her disease is not fatal or aggressive is not the only reason she considers herself fortunate. She went on to claim that because of her medical financial situation, she receives the best medical care and the most successful therapies. This is not something that the average person understands, and it pains her to admit it. “I’m also fortunate in that I have health insurance and access to the best doctors and therapies,” Jane added. “I recognize, and it hurts, that I am privileged in this.”

This is not Fonda’s first experience with cancer. She was told she had breast cancer more than ten years ago, and after surgery in 2010, the cancer was gone.

Jane Fonda expressed her grief at understanding that many individuals do not have the same opportunities as her. Her wealthy situation permits her to have the greatest care available, but others must make due with what the government can supply. “Almost every family in America has dealt with cancer at some point, and far too many do not have access to the quality health care I am receiving, which is unacceptable.”

The actress from Monster’s Inc. revealed that she will be undergoing chemotherapy for six months. Fortunately, she claims to be managing well with the effects of the radiation and vows that her advocacy will not be affected. “I’ve been doing chemo for 6 months and am handling the treatments fairly well,” she said. “I will not allow any of this to impede my climate activism.”

Many people have written about the epiphanies they had when faced with a life-threatening condition. Cancer, according to Jane Fonda, provided her with life lessons that she considered crucial for her later years. “Cancer is a teacher, and I’m listening to the lessons it has in store for me,” he wrote. “One thing it’s already taught me is the value of community.” The process of expanding and deepening one’s community so that we are not alone. And my disease and my age (I’m almost 85) teach me how important it is to adjust to new situations.

Jane appears to be more motivated than ever when it comes to spreading the word about climate change and finding methods to help. “We are living in the most crucial period in human history because what we do or do not do right now will define the nature of the future.” I will not let cancer prevent me from doing everything I can with every tool in my toolbox, including continuing to expand this Fire Drill Fridays community and finding new methods to leverage our collective strength to effect change.

“The midterms are ahead, and they are beyond crucial,” she continued, “so you can count on me to be right there with you as we increase our army of climate advocates.”
