A Maryland crossing guard has been dubbed a hero after putting herself in risk to save a kid from a speeding automobile. When Cpl. Annette Goodyear of the North East Police Department observed a car speeding up behind a boy who was in risk of being run over, she acted quickly. She absorbed the blow to defend the youngster, putting her own health at jeopardy. Fortunately, she only sustained minor injuries.
Stories such as Goodyear’s demonstrate the world’s love and compassion. There are still wonderful people who will aid us even if it does not directly benefit them. When parents see a dedicated and compassionate lady working with children on a regular basis, it gives them peace of mind that their children are in good hands.
It is difficult to predict one’s reaction in a crisis situation. Goodyear’s actions exemplify the “hero gene” – the impulse to behave selflessly in the face of peril. Her actions serve as a reminder that there are still people who are willing to help others at any moment, and the parents of the child she rescued are grateful to her for her bravery.
