After 75 years apart, a WWII veteran reunites with his long-lost love.

KT Robbins, a young American soldier serving in Briey, France during WWII, fell in love with a local French woman named Jeannine Ganaye. When KT’s regiment was immediately sent to the eastern front, their romance ended, leaving both Jeannine and KT sad as war loomed. Even as their lives progressed, they never lost sight of the passion with which they first fell in love.

KT kept a photo of Jeannine with him for the rest of his life, cherishing the memories of the love he had to give up as a young man. When KT received an invitation to return to France for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, he carried Jeannine’s picture and presented it to the media covering the commemoration festivities. He wanted they could put him in touch with her family so he could tell them how much she meant to him.

Despite their best efforts, the journalists were able to locate Jeannine and learn that she was still alive. KT immediately scheduled a visit to her retirement home. As soon as they both saw each other, they each reached for “the one that got away.” Everyone in the room was moved to tears by their reunion, and it’s nearly difficult to view the film without experiencing the depth of wistful emotion that engulfed this pair of star-crossed lovers.

After a few agonizing hours together, they parted ways again, but this time as friends who swore to stay in touch. During one of history’s most chaotic and horrific periods, it was love that gave them hope. Their long love story demonstrates the power of love and how it can persist even in the most challenging of circumstances. It serves as a reminder that genuine love stays forever and that, even if our paths alter, the memories of first love may linger on in our hearts forever.
